Long before the first Earth Day in 1970, Robert Cushman Murphy was warning us about Whaling. As A, world renown ornithologist, he was one of the first to raise the alarm to ban DDT. In 1960 Dr. Murphy led a successful citizen initiative to purchase 2200 acres as the first major natural park in Suffolk County. He published "Fish Shaped Paumanok" in 1964. Peconic Pathfinders was formed to find the hidden, unmarked and lost paths and in the spirit of Dr. Robert Cushman Murphy, we support environmental conservation. The 2,200-acre park was originally named the Peconic River County Park and renamed on what would have been his 100th birthday.   There are many paths, ponds and a river. The only marked trail today is the Pine Barrens Trail, AKA the Paumanok Path. Peconic Pathfinders has found the paths, cleaned them up and maintain them. We hope to be able to mark them soon. Depending on your status, now is the time to get back in shape or to get in better shape. There's not a lot of events going on in the winter. It's too wet and cold. Many of you travel to warmer climates in February. We now have many friends who live or travel to other parts of the country or other countries. We invite you to share with us on any of our Facebook groups. Tell your story and send photo's. Group photos are always fun. Tell us where you are running, walking or hiking.   You can participate in our workouts, training or hikes, using our races, training or hiking with the itsyourrace app. and share with us on Facebook.
